Antoinette Burkdorf Groff

  1928 Diary

Antoinette Burkdorf, daughter of John and Gertrude (Klock) Burkdorf, was born on 28 September 1956 in Oppenheim, Fulton County, New York. Antoinette married Fayette Groff (29 January 1853 - 2 February 1935), son of Benjamin and Lany Ann (Smith) Groff on 8 September 1875 in Oppenheim, New York. Fayette was buried in Fair View Cemetery, Handy Hills Farm, St. Johnsville, New York. Antoinette and Fayette had four children, Lucinda, Floyd Benjamin, a daughter who died at birth, and Gertrude Evadean Groff. Antoinette died on 10 July 1935 in St. Johnsville, Montgomery County, New York. She was buried next to her husband.  Antoinette has left quite a number of descendants.  From two of her four children, there have been four grandchildren (all deceased), 13 great-grandchildren (2 deceased), 35 great-great-grandchildren (my generation), 33 g-g-g-grandchildren, and 12 g-g-g-g-grandchildren that I know of!

Evadean and Keith came over.  E. done her wash and Lucinda done ours.  The two Floyds went out to Scoth Bush and bought a horse.

Tuesday, January 3, 1928 Pleasant

Lucinda went home this morning.  Alta went a teaching.  The two Floyds went and got the horse.  The Dr. was here to see Keith; he said he wasn't much sick.  Floyd took them home about four o clock.

Alta got breakfast.  I got dinner, when everything was ready, Shuster was here.  He and the two Floyds went over to the dam after dinner.

Floyd drawed three loads of lumber & and the others drawed manure.

Mr. Shuster and Floyd W. drawed manure.  Floyd and Mr. Newman went after a load of lumber and Floyd drawed him some straw from John Davis.

Saturday, January 7, 1928 Warm

Mr. Newman and Mr. Shuster and Herbert was here for dinner.  They was busy tearing down building.  They drawed four loads of lumber home.  Edith and Daniel was down awhile.

Warm and foggy all day.  Floyd and Alta went to church.  Lelia and Beulah Handy came.  Loyd took them home and then he brought Beulah back.

Alta went home.  Cinda is sick with pneumonia.  We had six men for dinner.  They are fixing the ice house.

Sent the wash down to Mrs. Johnsons.  Six men for dinner.  Rev. Luther and Mr. Costis called today.

Wednesday, January 11, 1928 Cold

We had six men for dinner.  Edith Casler gave birth to a son today weighed seven lbs.  Floyd went over to Herberts and stayed all night they are all sick.

Thursday, January 12, 1928 Cloudy

I got the breakfast.  Beulahs alarm did not go off soon enough.  Henry Shuster was here.  The two Floyds went to the auction of All-Crouse.  Mrs. Hoffman called in the afternoon.  Fayette has a cold.  Beulah ironed.

I baked bread and made fried cakes.  Had five men for dinner.  They finished putting in the cement in the ice house.

Floyd drawed ice from Knishkerns ponds.  Myron and Henry was here.  Floyd went to Vernon with the auto.

Sunday, January 15, 1928

Floyd and Beulah went to church.  Loyd and Lelia came.  Beulah went home with them.  Floyd and Alta came about seven o clock.

Monday, January 16, 1928

8 above zero this morning, cloudy all day.  Floyd drawed ice all day.  Alta couldn't get her car started again, the men had to go and get her.  Fayette went to the Dr., he paid him for my bill $21.

The men finished drawing and packing ice.  Mrs. Johnson did my wash.  I commenced reading North of ZC.

Floyd W. took Alta to school.  Henry Shuster was here, they finished drawing out manure.  Daniel came down a foot and took dinner with us.  Merlon came after him.

Herbert sawed wood for George Zimerman.  Evadean sewed on Keiths coat.

Six above zero.  We did up the work before dinner, then we sewed after dinner, nearly finished Keiths coat.

Evadean walked over to Charleys, and went with them to church.  Herbert and I took care of Keith.

Fayette and Floyd came after me after dinner.  Herbert and Cyrus drawed 3 loads of wood for Ada then he drawed down put of the woods for himself.

A terrible wind.  The men put a water bucket in for the two upper calves.

Stormed some.  Herbert and Evadean went to the village and left Keith here.  He walked some for us.  Alta went home with them.  Floyd W. went to press hay.  Floyd took buckwheat to Fort Plain and had it ground.

After dinner Floyd took me over to Vernons.  The baby is nice.  I cut out an underwaist and made it.  The men hung up the hams.  I weighed myself was 126 lbs.

Saturday, January 28, 1928

Snowed some.  I made bread, honey drop cakes and a large batch of fried cakes.  Mr. Newman was here to dinner.  Floyd drawed sawdust.  I mopped the kitchen and dining room.  Floyd & Alta came home in time for supper.

Floyd was the only one that went to church.  It was so cold I did not want to run the risk.

I done the wash for the first, since I was sick.  Floyd drawed ice for Myron, then after dinner they cut on our pond & put in.  Alta went after dinner to see Dr. Ingham.  He said she has a goiter.

Alta went home this morning.  Mr. Newman was here for dinner.  They put in ice.  In the afternoon Rore Davis and Grace and Bobby was here.  We had a fresh milk cow, the one that stands up by the bull, a black and white.

The missionary society met here.  Katie Christman and Daniel came with Edith.  Evadean & Keith came at night.  Herbert & the two Bishop boys came and they went down to see Ben Hur at the movies.  Evadean and Floyd B. went along.

Evadean and Keith stayed last night, and today Floyd took Evadean down to the village and she bought a dresser from the fire sale.  Herbert came after her.

I canned nine cans of pumpkins and made three squash and one apple pie.  The men sold a calf for five dollars.

Rained some.  The men fixed up the radio and the cistern pump.  John Davis went along with Floyd to the village.

I went to church for the first time since I was sick.  Evadean was there with Herbert and Keith.

Canned three cans of rolechers.  Daniel was here.  Johns went to Ft. Plain.  The Floyds split wood.  In the evening they went over to John Davises.  I had a letter from Alta.  She said Esther had to lye on her stomach on account of her burns.

Rain and very icy.  Fayette did not go to the barn before breakfast.  Myron came after his hams.  I sent a letter to Alta.

Myron, Grace and Bobby was up in the afternoon.  Floyd drawed a load of straw from John Davis for Myron.  Earl Casler brought over a bushel of carrots and took back a bushel of tall mom sweets.

I made bread and some drops and made johnny cake for dinner.  Mary Beekman called up and said Mrs. Sarah Beekman passed away one o clock; she was eighty three years old.  The Floyds drawed manure after dinner.

I done up the work, and made two cakes.  Alta came back on the --- o clock train, Floyd W. went after her to the village.

A lovely day.  I washed, hung the clothes out of doors.  Alta ironed.  Floyd took Fayette and myself and Miss Schiffer to Sarah Beekman's funeral, Loami's wife.  She looked so nice.

Rained in the evening.  Alta and I went over to Evadeans, they was eating dinner when we got there.  Herbert went up to Schuylers to saw wood.  Floyd sold Tapsy.

I made five batches of hard soap.  Mr. Newman was here for dinner.  Floyd drawed four loads of ice.  They came and killed Tapsy; we got $75 dollars for her.  Herbert sold his bull today to the same man for $100 D.  Alta done up the work.

Floyd took Evadean and I down to the village with the sedan.  We went to the sale of Mrs. Kittles good.  I bought towelling and sheeting.  Evadean went over to Mauds to make a visit.  Herbert was there sawing wood.  Alta and Floyd went to the village at night.

Myron & Mr. Newman was here for dinner.  They went home after dinner and Floyd and Herbert went down and sawed there wood.  Floyd W. cleaned the hen house.

Snowed all day.  I made a butternut and a sponge cake and ice cream.  Expected Herbert and Evadean over tomorrow, because her birthday is Monday.  Frank Smith brought some potatoes over to pay back what he had borrowed to plant.  The men are fixing harness tonight.

Herbert, Evadean and Keith was over.  I invited them over for Evadean's birthday.  We had fritters and ice cream and a butternut cake and a sponge cake.  Floyd took them to church.  Herbert did not feel well as he could not go.  Maud and the two girls went along.

Floyd W. took Alta and I over to Roses.  She wasn't at home, then he took us over to Mauds, he came after us.  At night F. B. went somewhere.

Warm and slushy - snowed and rained some last night.  Alta did not feel well this forenoon.  After dinner she and I went over to Alma Flanders awhile.  The men hung the gate on the bull's stall.

I washed, hung the clothes up in the laundry.  I finished my four sheets tonight.  There was a salesman from Albany went in the ditch out by the culvert.  Floyd & Fayette helped get him out.

Pleasant and warmer.  I went with Floyd over to Roses when he went down to the dam.  Floyd and Alta went to Little Falls.  Alta and I did the ironing.

Stormed some at time.  Herbert finished sawing wood over to Matalls before dinner, then I went home with him.  Evadean and I worked on my gingham dress.

Evadean baked bread.  I sewed a lot.  Keith was such a good boy.  Herbert and Cyrus went to the grange hall to the club.

Herbert and Evadean went to church, and I took care of Keith.  Evadean helped milk.  Cyrus went away and did not come home until Mon. morning.

The wind blew terribly all last night.  Evadean washed and ironed.  Fayette and Floyd came over and helped Herbert kill a beef cow.  In the eve we finished Evadeans stand cover and picked out butternuts.

Cleaned up for the missionary society.  I canned Evadeans cows heart and tongue and fried out the tallow.  John Bishop came to work for Herbert a few days.

Snowed nearly all forenoon.  Herbert drawed logs from the woods.  Seven of us to the M. So.  Floyd came over after me, the wind blew so very hard tonight.

Nice but drifted some all day.  Mr. Newman and Myron was here to dinner.  They was working on the wagons.  In the evening they all went over to Herberts but me.  Floyd took Evadeans kitchen cabinet over, and he and Herbert cut out the dried beef.

Snowed all forenoon and very cold.  Alta and I started for home seventeen minutes after two.  Stopped at Rev. Southers a little while and at Mr. Seymours.  Snowed very hard before we got to Little Falls.  Evadean & Keith had gone home, they was here all night.  Ada Handy is very sick.

Alta took me and Maud up to W. Handys to the missionary meeting.  In the evening Alta and I went to the village to church.  The boys boiled sap.  Heard the bull frogs holler.

I commenced to clean house, the men fixed conductors on the house.  Two agents here.  Watkins and Claud Sponable and the rag man.  Alta went up to her grandma Davis, she did not come home.

I had the bedding down from the south clothes press and aired.  Alta came home.  Daniel walked down and was here for dinner.  The roads are in a bad condition all over.

Warm and a strong south wind.  I made bread pies and fried cakes.  Floyd brought up wall board and went to Ft. Plain after a load of feed.  The boys are boiling sap tonight.  Little Brown May had a calf this morning.  Heard today Delia Brown passed off last night,  I sowed some cabbage seed & tomatoes.

Herbert brought Evadean & Keith over.  Alta took Evadean to Little Falls, she had a tooth extracted.  Keith was good.  We ironed after they got back, the boys went after another load.

I finished cleaning the last room, in the forenoon after dinner I cleansed about seven gal. of syrup.  The boys went to Dolgeville after the stove and washing machine.  Fayette & Floyd went to Ft. Plain in the morning.  In the eve, the boys went over to Herberts.

After dinner Alta went to the village, and Floyd went over to Harry Finches and helped his father saw wood.  I cleaned up the back stairs. B. Snell came after a calf, Floyd B. went over to Herberts in the eve.

Rained last night, very high winds today.  The barn inspector was here, Floyd W. brushed manure.  Alta embroidered.  I cleaned some cupboards.

I did not feel very well.  Alta and I did up the work, after dinner Floyd took Herbert and I up to Little Falls, and we bought wallpaper for my bedroom, side hall and Floyds room.  The boys went on up to Mr. Seymours.  Vebas came and Alta had gone home with Herbert.  Veba and Floyd W. went after her.

Herberts came over to dinner.  Floyd took them to church, and I took care of Keith.  Vebas went home about three o clock.

Did not wash.  Took up my bedroom carpet and Fayette varnished the wood work.  Alta went over to Mauds.  Mr. Sheldon called.  Floyd W. worked on his car after dinner.

Floyd brought Mrs. Frye, then they papered our bedroom and the side hall.  Dr. Brockett brought a ring for High Life's nose.  Floyd took Mrs. Frye home about ten o clock.

Snowed so that the ground was all white this morning, then cold and strong winds.  We washed, and Alta ironed some of the thin things.  Mr. Newman was here after dinner and put in some cement.  John Davis has a sick horse.

Floyd went down after the corn, one load before dinner, and one after.  I went over to Franks when he went after the last load.  Johns horse died.

Put down my carpet in my bedroom.  Floyd W. set the post for my wash line.  Herbert and Evadean and Ada went to the village and they left Keith here.  The antryne man was here.  Floyd brought up a load of feed from Ft. Plain.

Ada Handy came up with Floyd.  After dinner Delos came.  Ada ironed some for me, I did not feel well.  Floyd went to schoolmeeting, and Ada went along to the missionary meeting held in the church.  John Davis was elected trustee.

I felt better today.  Cleaned the bathroom.  Floyd took Seymour's buckets home.  This evening I raked some of the yard.

Temp 94 degrees.  I cleaned Floyds guest room.  The men went over to the other place to build fence.  Floyd & Alta went over to Walt Grays this eve.  Alta went over to W. Flanders this afternoon.

Thunder showers about six o clock.  Bertha Robinson was up.  She and I went over to Evadeans.  Fayette cleaned out the flower bed.

I did my mending.  Wasnt feeling very well.  Evadean was here at night a while.  The boys went up to practice.  Floyd W. planted some potatoes in the garden.

Floyd went on the land with the tractor for the first this afternoon.  Floyd W. and Alta went over to Herberts.  In the evening they went to Lassellville.  I cleaned the parlor and some upstairs and the hall.

I made ice cream, for the club, they gave an entertainment.  The hall was full, some did not get in.

I did not feel very good today.  Fayette and I went with Herbert over home a little while, he took Jain Crouse over to blast out a couple of rocks.

Floyd plowed and Floyd W. dragged the three corner lot.  I cleaned the dining room.  Alta bronzed the picture frames.  She went to the village after supper.

Went to church, quite a few there.  After church Alta and Floyd went up to Grandma Davis.  Floyd and I went over to see Odessa baby, we seen the baby, but Odessa wasn't there.

We washed and ironed.  Floyd W. drilled in 144 acres of oats.  I sowed my sweet peas.  Alta took the fish cans down to the central station.  When she got back she took me over to Evadeans.

I took care of Keith while E milked.  She baked bread and we did a big ironing.  Herbert sowed oats, did not get down to the house until after nine o clock.  Floyd Weaver helped milk.

Evadean is coming down with a cold, Clarance Beekman came over after three o clock and took us to the village, when we came back I stayed at home.  Floyd finished plowing across the road.

Clifford Moshers house burnt down about noon.  Caught from the stove pipe upstairs.  The men went up and helped, they drilled in oats after they got back.  Alta cleaned the living room.  Fayette and I set out the dahlias.  Herberts was over in the evening a little while.  Evadeans cold was worse.

Rained a while and cloudy.  I cleaned the loungeing room.  Floyd went to Ft. Plain after grain.  After dinner they drawed a load of brush, cleaned the red raspberries out.

I washed, Alta ironed some.  In the afternoon we worked up in Floyds room.  The men went over to Herberts and cut fenceposts.  Bert Klock and wife was here in the evening.

In the evening we had a thunder shower.  Alta went to Lassellsville to have her car fixed.  The rest of us went over to Herberts to build fence.  I helped Evadean.  Keith was so mischievous.

I went to the village with Floyd in the morning and had my glasses fixed.  The rest of the folks went over to Herberts, and I stayed at home, and cleaned the kitchen.  They finished building fence.  They turned the milk cows out to pasture.

Fayette and I cleaned fish.  Then he went over to Evadeans, and helped her, he put down her linoleum in her guest room.  I made my curtains for my bedroom.

I finished cleaning my bedroom.  The men plowed over on the other place.  Floyd got some potatoes over to Harry Finches.  Herbert and Evadean went to the village this afternoon, left Keith here.  Ethel Haig came back with them.

Rained more today, than ever.  Floyd and I went to Addie Storms funeral; she did not look natural, her face was puffed up so.  It has rained every day this week.  Herberts came after Keith after dinner.

Baked bread and cleaned all up for company.  Mr. and Mrs. Beard and Mr. and Mrs. Winnie came after dinner.  The men finished drilling in corn across the road.  Claud Stall brought a Fords on tractor this morning.  The All work broke yesterday.

Washed.  Alta ironed and canned a doz. cans of rhubarb.  After supper we went and looked after strawberries.  Floyd W. cultivated corn.  Fayette and Floyd worked up to the grange hall.

We went to Floyd and Alta went up to her grandpa Davis.  In the evening Veba, Marion and Mr. Smiths people drove in for a little while.  They had been on a company trip.

I did a large wash and then pitted cherries for seven cans then canned them.  Alta painted the ceiling in the other house.  Mr. Newman was here.  The boys went over and put in the buckwheat.

Alta went home after she did the ironing.  I canned nine cans of cherries and made a batch of jam.  Lelia and Nina was here.  Loyd brought them.  Myron and Ms. New came after dinner.  Floyd W. cultivated corn.

I made ice cream, for the missionary society .  Sold it up to the hall, Inghams Mills put on a play.  It was fine.  Evadean was over and did her wash, Alta came home.

Floyd and I went up to church, did not have any S. School.  Only Allens, Johns & Herberts were there.  It is closed until the second of Sept.  Floyd took Herbert, Evadean, myself and Keith to Ft. Plain.  Ethel Haig wasn't at home.

Windy, cloudy and rained some.  Evadean came over with her wash, we did both washes, did not get many of them dry.  Floyd papered and Floyd took Herberts to Ft. Plain in the eve.  Herbert got a spring for his engine radiant.

We went to Gloversville.  Herbert, Evadean and Keith went along.  We stopped on the side of the road and ate our dinner in the car.  We called on Mr. & Mrs. Eavans.  None of the Canes were at home.  Alta had a house full of co.  James & Lany, Lucinda, Mr. & Mrs. Dygert, A. Dygert, Mr. Moot, Harry & all of Vebas.  We ate supper up there.

Cold last night.  I did the washing.  Picked a pail of cucumbers & three ripe tomatoes for the first the tomatoes.  Drawed in seven loads of hay.  Alta and Marion & children went to the village, had a blowout.  I milked four cows and a half tonight, the first I have milked in over a year.

I ironed and canned pickles.  The men drawed in seven loads of hay.  Edd VanSlyke was up and done some wiring.  Alta and Marion went over to Evadeans this evening.

Wednesday, August 15, 1928 Hot Weather

Floyd took Marion, children and myself over to Evadeans so she could go and look for berries.  She got 4 or 5 qts.  Herbert brought us home, about ten o clock.  Alta had had such a time with her hands, she cut up sharp peppers.

Marions birthday, I had them all over, for dinner and supper.  I made blackberry pies and had chicken pot pie for dinner.

Rained a little at noon, just enough to stop them from finishing haying.  The girls went over to Mr. Cairns and Mauds a little while.  Floyd and Pete went a fishing.  John Davis finished thrashing, had four hundred bu. of oats.

Cloudy, rain & sunshine.  The men finished haying.  Alta took Marion & children up to Grandma Davis.  Floyd Weaver helped Arthur Hyde thrash this afternoon.

We all went over to James & Lana's.  Keith did not feel very good.  We came back by the way of Ft. Plain.  When we got home we found a slip under the door with Dan Devoe.  Lillian and Ada Failings came.

I did a big wash.  Alta got pickles ready for golden glow pickles.  I canned ten cans, five for her and five for myself.  Alta and I called on May Bellinger and her boy.  Fayette went up to see Daniel.  He says he is failing very fast.

I ironed.  Grace Drake was here to supper.  Floyd met her at the train and took her over to Herberts tonight.  A hard shower this evening.  Will Handy finished thrashing this noon.

I did up the work and done my mending.  The men all went down and unloaded the car of grain.  Evadean, Grace and Keith went over to Mauds.  Rev. Luther and family was here a calling this afternoon.  Floyd Weaver went down and got some cream tonight.

Very warm, rained a very little in the evening, rain all around us.  The men got in a few oats after milking.  Floyd & I took Grace Drake to the station.  I bought an oil cloth for the dining room table.  Alta finished her dress tonight.

Had a hard shower at noon.  Floyd was going to take us down to the Klock reunion.  Being it rained so we waited until after dinner, then we went and had a nice time.  There was more there, then last year.  Alta canned corn & beans.  She has canned 37 cans of things, the last two days.

Alta and I went to Little Falls after dinner.  Floyd, Fayette and I went up to Johns this morning.  Dan was very sick; he did not know us, then we went down to see aunt Ettie, she was a little better.
