We attended L. C. W. meeting at Ferne Allen’s.

Margaret Beekman and Charles Ingersoll were here in the evening.

Friday, May 3, 1968

Madeleine Taylor stayed for lunch with us. (Mr. Marsh was here). Herbert, Keith, Karen and Ann went to Neighbor Night meeting at Perth.

Saturday, May 4, 1968

Herbert went over to the auction at the Jackson Farm. We went to the frittersupper at the Lutheran Church in St. J.

Sunday, May 5, 1968

We attended church. Then we called on Lynne, Jennie and Florence Cronkhite.

Monday, May 6, 1968

Herbert worked on the lawn and flower beds. I stitched on the grange quilt. I typed material for grange programs.

Tuesday, May 7, 1968

Herbert went to church council meeting. I went to the hairdressser’s. The men bought a new set of drags, 20 ft. wide.

Wednesday, May 8, 1968

Alma and Ruth Sheffield were here in the afternoon. Russell and Irene Dillenback came in the evening. Dean stayed with me a while. There were 5 deer by the pond.

It rained by spells. We received a letter from Ruth. I worked on sorting out recipes.

Friday, May 10, 1968

We attended grange meeting at C. Creek. Herbert and Madeleine washed the windows in the guest room.

Saturday, May 11, 1968

Rachel Horn came for a visit in the forenoon, Herbert dragged. Keith H. drilled in 3 pieces of corn (23 acres). Letter from Joanne and card from Alyson and Jeff.

I read the book “A City for St. Francis” by Evelyn Wells. I enjoyed reading it.

Sunday, May 12, 1968 (Mother’s Day)

We attended church. Then we called on Flo Chase. Herbert took me to the “Jack and Jill” restaurant for supper.

Monday, May 13, 1968

We did a large washing. Betty Triumpho called in the afternoon. Herbert mowed the cemetery and the church lawn. Ford tractor at Snell place burned up.

Tuesday, May 14, 1968

I did part of the ironing. Herbert dragged until late. I called Marion Groff on the telephone.

Wednesday, May 15, 1968

I finished the ironing. Herbert used the Rotavator. Ethel H. called up. I called Irene Klock and Hazel Trumbull.

Thursday, May 16, 1968

I wrote to Ruth Burritt. I rode up with Herbert to Ed. Widonke’s. It was a rainy day. I talked with Ruth Failing on the telephone.

Friday, May 17, 1968

We went to Cooperstown for our appointments at the hospital. Then we went to see Grace Drake. We took her with us to call on Anna Ulrich at Sidney Center. I talked with Lucille Hunt Bennett.

Herbert mowed the lawn. I stitched on the grange quilt. Ann and James Fuellmer came in on their way to Jr. Prom. They made a fine looking couple . Marion Groff was here for supper.

Special Events

For Mother’s Day Keith and Janice and the children gave us petunias, a geranium and triliums. Letter from Joanne and Gordon and card from Jeffery and Alyson.

We went to church. Then we went to see Will and Mildred Thresher and stayed for supper. We stopped to see Margaret B. and C. Ingersoll a little while.

Monday, May 20, 1968

Rainy day. I basted the hem around the edge of the grange quilt. Martha Hillegas called on the telephone.

Herbert took Beulah Sanders and me to the DAR meeting.

Wednesday, May 22, 1968

Herbert dragged the lot across the Thruway. I walked as far as Taylors and back by myself.

Thursday, May 23, 1968

Keith planted the corn across the Thruway. Herbert dragged. William Wilson called in the afternoon. I walked down the road aways alone.

Friday, May 24, 1968

Madeleine and Herbert washed 6 windows upstairs. I cleaned the rolltop desk. Alta and Floyd called in the afternoon. Keith Herbert planted corn.

We did the washing. Herbert worked on the lawn. We took the DAR things to Eva Williams.

Special Events

Keith Herbert’s birthday was on the 25th. Janice invited us down for dessert, but as the heifers got out and 1 was missing. And they went to look for it, it was too late.

We went to church. We called at Harold Handy’s, on Emma Timmerman and at Palmer Haughton’s.

Monday, May 27, 1968

The men planted corn on the piece across from the house in C. Creek. I did part of the ironing and made cookies. I talked with Alma who had arrived home from Hawaii the day before.

Tuesday, May 28, 1968

The men drilled in oats in the upper east lot, next to Frank Youkers. I had a letter from Nellie Lance. Keith H. went back to college. Keith R. went to Ithaca in late afternoon.

Wednesday, May 29, 1968

A very rainy day. Late in the afternoon we took flowers for Herbert’s family in St. J. and to Crum Creek Groff cemetery.

Thursday, May 30, 1968

Marjorie Lee and Nina Handy came in the afternoon and stayed for supper. We had a very nice time. It was a rainy day.

Friday, May 31, 1968

Alma Miller and Ethel Haig came in the P. M. and stayed for supper. Alma told us about her trip to Honolulu.

Herbert cleaned the grange hall. Herbert and I went to George Youkers after grange sewing contest dresses. We visited with Marion Groff at her house in C. Creek.

Jeffrey was 7 yrs old today. I did quite a lot of housework for me.

Tuesday, June 4, 1968

Herbert took Myron Ladue, Edith Clause, Luler Robinson and me to Neighbor Night at Bleecker. The people enjoyed Myron’s slides.

Wednesday, June 5, 1968

Herbert did not feel well. Keith R. cane home from the Eastern Milk Producers meeting at Syracuse. Keith H. and Edward started putting chopped alfalfa in the silo.

Thursday, June 6, 1968

Herbert felt better. We got the plants out on the front porch . Senator Robert Kennedy died from assassins bullets in his head.

Friday, June 7, 1968

Madeleine was here. We got a lot of housecleaning done; the front porch and the bay window. Very warm weather – 88, grange baked sale.

Saturday, June 8, 1968

I made chocolate cookies. Herbert put out the tomato plants and gladioli bulbs.

Special Events

At the grange hall on Sunday evening we attended a covered dish supper in honor of the 5 who joined church. We had a good hymn sing. Pastor showed slides.

After church we called on Flo Chase at the Dowling Nursing Home in Utica. Then we went to see Esther and Peter Maiura.

Monday, June 10, 1968

June V. Stoesser called in the P. M. Herbert went to the auction for a little while. He planted more things in the garden. He and Keith H. moved the single bed upstairs.

We called at the Chapman Funeral parlor to see Mary Haughton. Then we stopped at Lull’s to see Mrs. Walrath.

We did the washing. I walked down to Keith’s and then Herbert came after me. Henry Shuster dropped dead.

Thursday, June 13, 1968

I did the ironing. We went to Ft. Plain. I bought white shoes. We called on Ruth and Reuben Failing. Received letter from Emma Timmerman.

Friday, June 14, 1968

We went to grange meeting at Crum Creek. Edith Claus and Lulu Robinson went with us. Herbert and I stopped at Smith’s funeral parlor.

Saturday, June 15, 1968

This was Wayne’s 16th birthday. We went to call on Clarence and Ada Gray. Clarence did not feel well. He had had to have a toe amputated. I washed the anniversary dishes in the china closet in the front room.

We went to church. Then we went to the manor for dinner (Fathers Day). In the evening we went to Baccalaureate at the Methodist church.

In the afternoon I went to the hairdresser. Herbert talked with Alta and Ada Gray.

I shortened and washed my green dress. We called at the funeral parlor to see Grant Smith. Then we went to F. P. to Primaries.

I attended the DAR Tri-County chapter meeting. I went with Irene Klock, Grave Lineker and Blanche Wood.

We went to Fort Plain to buy commencement presents. We had an extension telephone put upstairs. I made oatmeal cookies. Very cold and windy. Mrs. Finch called on telephone.

Janice and I went to variety shower for Evelyn Groff at the grange hall.

Saturday, June 22, 1968

Alta stopped in for a few minutes. Ann and Jim came after tables, etc to use the next day. I had a very severe cold.

We went to church at St. J. in the forenoon. Then we went to Ann’s graduation at St. J. at 3 p. m. We went to her “open house” and then to Wm. Klemme’s.

I wrote a letter to Gertrude Lance. Herbert hoed in the garden in the morning before it rained.

Cloudy and rainy again. We had a letter from Iva and Philip Wendell. I cleaned part of the china closet and polished silver.

A very rainy day. Herbert and I cleaned some of the silver and dishes on a couple of shelves in the china closet.

We called on Myron, Grace and Roger Johnson. We took clothes to dry clean at St. J.

We attended grange meeting at C. Creek, Mae Bellinger came out first in chocolate cake and doughnut contests. We had a letter from Wolenskis.

Herbert and I walked as far as Taylors. He weeded in the garden in the afternoon.

We attended C. Creek Church. We took Lansing Lord’s present to him at the Lake. We ate dinner at Vroomers. We called on Doris Casler. Ethel Handy and Richard and family came in the evening.

The meeting of officers and directors of S-Z-T Reunion was held here in the evening. Weather was hot and sultry.

We did the washing and I ironed a few pieces.

The L. C. W. meeting was here in the evening. I rode with Herbert up to East Herkimer to get some milking machine supplies.

I finished the ironing. Herbert took me up to see Martha Hillegas for a couple of hrs. Ruth Failing called on the phone.

Friday, July 5, 1968

Madeline was here. Herbert and I washed outing sheets and blankets.

Herbert and I went to East Herkimer and Little Falls for lunch and called on Margaret Beekman. Catherine Hoffman called in the afternoon. Mildred and Will Thresher came for the evening. We played pinochle.

The Goldsteins were down at Keiths for several days. Bob and 4 boy scouts camped at the old place in C. Creek.

We attended Crum Creek Church and then came home. Late in the P. M. we called on Mrs Avery and Mr. Arndt. Wm. Arndt and Velma were gone.

We did the washing. It was a nice day and the men drew hay. Margaret and Charles called in the evening.

It was a nice day. The men drew a lot of hay. Bessie Gottung called in the afternoon. Keith went to grange executive meeting at Ithaca.

Herbert went with Keith H. to Herkimer to get Keith’s motor cycle license. We went to the grocery store in the afternoon.

Marcia Mumma called. We attended Pomona grange at C. Creek. Herkimer C. put on the program.

Mr. Marsh was here in the P. M. In the evening we went to Smith’s funeral parlor, where Libbie Shulenberg was. Irene Klock called on the phone.

A very warm day. We attended Palatine Church where the 3 Lutheran congregations had service. We did not go to the picnic. We called at Bob and Hazel Brown’s in the evening.

Warm again. The men drew hay from the Finch place. Herbert disced at C. Creek in P. M.

Tuesday, July 16, 1968

I ironed. Herbert disced another field. We called at the Chapman Funeral Home. Ruth Burkdorf had died.

I finished the ironing. In the afternoon, Herbert took me to spend the afternoon with Ethel Haig.

Thursday, July 18, 1968

Very hot day. I called Ethel Haig on the telephone. Herbert disced at the Floyd’s. Keith H. and Keith R. picked corn (grown in 1967 and had not been harvested.

Friday, July 19, 1968

I went to the hairdresser and we bought Evelyn’s present. Herbert plowed in the forenoon at C. Creek. Leland and Iva were here in the evening.

It was a very beautiful day. We went to the wedding of Evelyn Groff and Michael Thode. We attended the reception at Klock’s park. We took sandwiches to C. Creek but did not stay for the card party.

We attended C. Creek church. We came home for a while. Then we went to Utica and saw Flo Chase. We went to Lockners and stayed for supper.

Monday, July 22, 1968

Ethel Haig went to the Amsterdam Hospital. We did the washing and I worked most of the day. Herbert disced at C. Creek. The men drew hay from Finches.

Tuesday, July 23, 1968

A very nice day. I did the ironing. The men started chopping oats to put in the silo. Ruth Failing and Hilda called on the telephone.

Wednesday, July 24, 1968

It was Jack Black’s funeral. I worked on the grange program. Keith R. and Ed Restreapo went to grange Leadership School in the afternoon and evening.

I trimmed some of the pink spirea. After supper Herbert and I went for a ride up to Edna Finch’s and over to Crum Creek.

We went to grange meeting. Gayle Singleton played her clarinet. Bob and Barbara Goldstein and 2 boys called here.

The Goldsteins and Singletons called. Marion Groff brought us berries and currants. I baked cookies; washed and ironed a couple of dresses.

We went to C. Creek church. In the P. M. we called on Hannah King. Veba, Marion, Betty, Carl and the 2 girls were here.

Ruth Burritt came in the afternoon. It was a nice day. Herbert and I did the washing.

We went to call on the Vorhees and then on Alta and Floyd. In the evening Ruth and I were invited to Ruth Sheffields.

Madeline was here to clean. Herbert cleaned the cellar way and steps. I called R. Sheffield on the telephone.

The men drew hay into Floyd’s barn in the P. M. Herbert and I went to F. Plain after my medicine. We took cakes and milk to C. Creek for the card party.

The men put 1670 bales of hay in Floyd’s barn. Herbert and I did the washing and went down to the bank. A very beautiful day.

It rained so the men could not draw hay. So they went to “Farm Day” at Canastota. I wrote to Gertrude Lance. Marion Groff called on the phone.

Alma Miller called in the P. M. We took wedding present up to Margaret and Clarence. We then went to L. C. W. meeting at Mary Groff’s.

Herbert went to the auction where Floyd Finch’s cows were sold.

We went to grange meeting. Herbert and Janice then took Keith R. to Jacquays at Hamilton. Keith and Mr. Jacquay were to take plane in the morning to Kansas City.

We attended the wedding of of Margaret Beekman and Charles Ingersoll at the Inghams Mills church. Ann came back from grange camp at Speculator. We were so glad to have her back at home.

We attended service at the St. J. Congregational Church. We then took Alma and Ethel to dinner at Vrooman’s at Caroga Lake. We then called at Nina Handy Levensaler’s camp.

We did the washing and I did part of the ironing. In the evening Alberta Koch, Lulu R. and Richard Bellinger came to help plan for centennial grange meeting.

A very busy day. I finished the ironing. Herbert picked beans and I canned 5 pts. and 2 qts. Albert and Calla Getman called. Alyson came down to Keith’s.

Keith Bauder came to call in the afternoon. We went to Lulu Robinson’s for grange committee work.

Herbert didn’t feel well. Madeleine was here. We returned the chair to Grace Bellinger, which I had used since being back from hospital.

Robert Brown was in Cooperstown Hospital. We called on Alta and Floyd.

Margaret and Charles were here in the evening. Rainy day and so the men could not draw hay.

We attended union services at St. J. Reformed church. Albert and Bertha were here in the evening. Keith R. came home from Kansas City.

We called on Margaret and Charles Ingersoll at Dolgeville. They have a very nice house.

We didn’t do anything special, except visit, played a game of Scrabble, etc. Jeffrey didn’t feel well.

Joanne, Jeffrey and Alyson went home. Herbert and I canned beans. I talked with Alma and Alta on the telephone.

Saturday, August 24, 1968

We went to see Genie Christman in the Gloversville Hospital. Marion and Alta called in the evening. Then Alberta Koch came and we worked on grange work.

Special Events

On Aug. 25 the S-T-Z Reunion at Snells Bush. 185 people present (85 cars).

Sunday, August 25, 1968

We left early for the reunion. Herbert resigned as president. I said I would try to finish my term of office. A good meeting. Keith H. came to watch television.

Monday, August 26, 1968

I worked most of the day writing up the part for Fri. night. Bruce Litchfield called in the P. M.

Herbert bought a new lawn mower. He mowed the lawns here and at the grange hall.

Alberta came down and we worked some more on the program for Fri. night.

Thursday, August 29, 1968

We went up to the grange hall to put up the quilt and get things ready for the evening. We took flowers up to the grange hall and called on Alta and Floyd.

Friday, August 30, 1968

We went quite early in the evening to the grange hall. We took Edith Claus and Lulu R. (See below under special events). Barbara Goldstein brought us 2 beautiful books.

Saturday, August 31, 1968

We went to Cooperstown to see Robert Brown. Hazel and George were there. Robert said he was to go home the next day.

Special Events

We had the special meeting at which pictures were shown by the opaque projector to show the history of C. Creek. Then the centennial quilt was auctioned off for $50 to Richard Bellinger.

We attended the St. J. Methodist Church. We called on Ada & Clarence Gray in the P. M. Gayle Simpleton went home.

Monday, September 2, 1968

Glenn Crews went home. The Goldsteins went home. Bob had come down with the mumps.

Tuesday, September 3, 1968

We did the washing. We canned 6 qts. of tomatoes.

We attended L. C. W. meeting at Olga Beischers. We went to the bank after dinner.

Thursday, September 5, 1968

Lottie and Edison Handy called in the afternoon. It was Pomona grange meeting, but Herbert & I didn’t feel well enough to go.

Friday, September 6, 1968

Herbert went to see uncle Milo Smith at the Little Falls Hospital. Alma Miller and Marietta Kelsey came in the afternoon. Mr. Marsh was here.

Saturday, September 7, 1968

Alma came after some tomatoes and stayed for lunch. Then Herbert & I went to C. Creek. He mowed the church lawn. We called on Ennett and Laura. It was a beautiful day.

We attended church at C. Creek. Herbert took gladiolas and Ralph fixed them for the vases. We went to see Genie Christman at Hines Rest Home in Gloversville.

Monday, September 9, 1968

Herbert drove for the men getting hay. I got beets ready and cooked to can. I washed out some dresses.

We went to see Genie Christman in the evening. We canned the beets.

Wednesday, September 11, 1968

We canned tomato juice. Alma came after tomatoes. She & I played a game of “Scrabble.” A dark, rainy day.

We did the washing. We ate supper at the Dandee Doughnut store in L. Falls & then went to see Uncle Milo Smith at the hospital.

Friday, September 13, 1968

I went for a hair appointment. We went to the grange & had election of officers. Keith was presented his Silver Star certificate & a cake in his honor.

Saturday, September 14, 1968

I did the ironing. I made a cake for the C. Creek card party. Marion Groff brought down a box of cards & letters. It was a wonderful gift.

There were many letters which I had written when I was in college. They brought back many memories & many events I had forgotten.

Ann started college. Keith & Janice took her to Morrisville. We went to C. Creek Church. We went to make some calls but didn’t find the people at home. We ate at Pete’s Restaurant.

Herbert helped with the haying at C. Creek. Alta & Floyd Weaver called for a little while. A beautiful sunshiny day.

Herbert took Beulah Sanders & me to the D. A. R. meeting and came after us. We had a nice long letter from Joanne.

Alma came after tomatoes. We went to the Bible class meeting at the St. J. Lutheran Church.

Thursday, September 19, 1968

Lina Thode called in the forenoon and we had a nice visit. A very busy day. We went to see Genie in the afternoon. We stopped at the church Supply store. Dean stayed here, while Janice did the work in the barn. Dean had been ill and they didn’t want him in barn.

Madeliene came to work. She said she is going to try to get a job in the Beechnut Factory.

The men put hay in the Snell barn. Margaret & Charles were here in the evening.

We went to C. Creek to church. Then we went after Alma & Ethel. They had invited us to dinner at the Stone Lodge. We went for a ride to Ephratah & then took a road through the woods.

Herbert & I did the washing & I did most of the ironing. We heard that Rev. Briele had died.

Tuesday, September 24, 1968

Herbert contracted with Frank Warmer and R. Frederick to put new roof on the part of the barn, which used to be the horse barn (1316).

We went to Smith’s Funeral Parlors. Then we went to Bible Class.

Thursday, September 26, 1968

Went to the grange installation at Crum Creek. We had a letter from Ann. Herbert attended Rev. Briele’s funeral. Rev. and Mrs. Butterer came here to call after the funeral.

Friday, September 27, 1968 Dean’s Birthday

Alice Hedges Moore and a friend of hers came in the forenoon. They stayed for lunch and until about the middle of the afternoon. The men finished the barn roof.

We went to F. Plain the buy Dean’s birthday present. We went to the supper at the St. J. Lutheran church. Then we took cake to grange hall and went to see Harold & Dorothy Handy.

Special Events

On Sunday on our ride we went over to our old place. We saw a large bird, which according to a bird book, we think was a ruffed grouse.

After church, we called on Marguerite Finch. It felt like frost, so Herbert brought in some of the plants and picked tomatoes. Keith H. came in to say goodbye.

Special Events

We had farewell party for Eduardo Lestrepo at the grange hall. We had a very nice time. The girls (Ann & Karen) had decorated the hall. We ate supper. Then he opened his presents & we showed slides.

We came home after church. Then after a while, Marion G. stopped and stayed for supper. Herbert took negatives up to Margaret’s & Charles.

Alma took Herbert & me to Cooperstown. Herbert entered the hospital. George Petri is in the same room with Herbert. Karen stayed all night with me.

Marion took me over to see Herbert. Herbert had had a lot of x-rays. I called Joanne on the telephone. Karen stayed again.

Alma took me over to the hospital. They gave Herbert more tests.

Herbert wanted to go for a ride; so we went to C. Creek, East Creek & then home. Emmett Claus came to the house & showed us movies of Fonda Fair & Mt. Equinox in Vermont.

Marion G. took Herbert & me to the Cooperstown Hospital. The doctors said they would operate in the morning. Keith & Ann went to Fredonia where State Grange held its memorial service in the evening.

Alma took me to the hospital. They operated on Herbert at 8 AM but it was five pm before they brought him from the recovery room. We stayed until 8:30.

Reuben & Ruth Failing took me to Cooperstown. Herbert didn’t feel well at all and so I didn’t stay in the room very long at a time.

Alma took me to F. Plain to the hairdressers, bank, grocery store, drug store and to the Helmer Dress Shop, where I bought a new dress.

It continued to rain, rain, rain. In the forenoon Emmett Mosher washed storm windows and put on the winter screens on back porch. Alma came after her Christmas cards.

Will & Mildred Thresher came in the afternoon. Then in a little while Margaret & Charles came. It was cloudy but it did not rain.

Marion Groff & Russell Klock called. I rode to St. J. with Keith to attend DAR meeting. I was on the supper committee. I came home with Margaret Ann & Beulah Sanders. Roads were very slippery with snow.

Mr. Marsh, the therapist, was here. Emmett & Hilda were here for supper and the evening. Karen & Wayne went to Wagner College with the group of Luther Leaguers. Richard Bellinger came in the afternoon and delivered a large beautiful basket of fruit for Herbert from the grange.

We were tired after being up late the night before. We trimmed the Christmas tree here. I tried to finish writing the Christmas cards.

We talked with Joanne on the phone in the evening. All 8 of Keith’s family, Miguel Rubiano and Victor Philips were here for a 9:30 breakfast. They stayed until after 12. We had a program, sang Christmas song, & opened presents.

Emma Timmerman sent me a pillow. Madeliene was here. I finished hemming the ends of the new rilenteer for under the tablecloth. Very cold. Herbert called on Varnum Casler.

Freezing rain. Herbert cleaned the cupboard in laundry. I cleaned the writing desk, wrote checks, washed & ironed lace tablecloth. We played “Canasta.”

We went to St. J. to church. Pastor Johnson had gone to Buffalo & he had a supply pastor. The tractor on a milk tanker burned on the Thruway across from our house.

I wrote letters and shortened my red dress. I had a letter from Alton Rowe telling about Eunice Dyer’s death on Nov. 19. Herbert called Curt & Loretta on the phone.

Herbert went to F. Plain to the bank and after groceries. Janice called & said Mrs. Beuche had died on Sunday night. I wrote a few letters. I didn’t feel well.
