January 1, 1974
I felt a little better. The men moved heifers. Herbert laid the padding under
part of the linoleum at C. Creek. I made 3 bed pads & crocheted some.
January 2, 1974
Herbert took me over to see Dr. Carey. It was a nice day to go. Herbert went to
Church Council meeting at Ralph Groffs.
January 3, 1974
Herbert went up to C. Creek to work in the house. I did quite a lot of work. We
put away most of the Christmas decorations.
January 5, 1974
Madeliene was here. The letter came about the Alaskan trip. We think we will
send in our reservation tomorrow. The Eisenlord house got on fire in the late P.
M. It did a lot of damage in west living room.
January 6, 1974
We attended C. Creek church. Then we went to visit Ira & Edith Timmerman & told
them about the Alaska trip, and they may go with us.
January 7, 1974
We did a large washing. Herbert helped Karen at C. Creek in P. M. I talked on
the telephone to Marion Groff about going on grange tour.
January 8, 1974
I did the ironing. Herbert helped Karen in P. M. Ethel H. called on telephone. A
cold sunshiny day. I walked down to the mailbox. I wrote to Veba & Marion Black.
January 9, 1974
Herbert took me to Cooperstown Hospital to see Dr. Carey. Then we ate in the
cafeteria. We then were able to visit Sinclair Ward. Mr Clare’s father was
brought into the same room with him.
January 10, 1974
The Pomona Grange meeting was postponed on account of freezing slippery roads. I
worked a lot on my quilt. Herbert went to S. Johnsville to get ice taken off of
fender on our car.
January 11, 1974
Schools were closed. Madeliene came in the afternoon. Herbert went to get
groceries & to get his hair cut.
January 12, 1974
Linda Taylor & Robert Mitchell were married today at the St. J. Methodist
Church. We attended the wedding and then went to the reception at the Manor.
January 13, 1974
We went to C. Creek to church. The Mosher family was there in memory of Mr. &
Mrs. Leonard Mosher. Then Herbert & I went up to see Charles & Margaret. They
asked us to stay for supper.
January 14, 1974
I worked on my quilt most of the day. Herbert went up to the old place to work
in the afternoon. I talked with Alta, Etta, Juanita and Ethel Haig on the
telephone.
January 15, 1974
I worked on quilt in A. M. In the P. M. we went to see Florence Cronkhite in the
Little Falls Hospital. We went to Congregational supper & meeting at Keith’s and
Janice’s.
January 16, 1974
Herbert went to C. Creek to help work on the old house in P. M. I worked on my
quilt, wrote 2 letters and started a large jigsaw puzzle.
January 17, 1974
We attended the Agway yearly meeting and roast beef supper at Fort Plain Masonic
Temple. We had a letter from Jeffrey.
January 18, 1974
I made pineapple cookies. We worked some on the puzzle. Madeliene was here.
Herbert took me to the hairdressers in P. M. It was a very cold day.
January 19, 1974
In the evening Herbert took me up to Juanita’s to attend a baby shower for
Karen. Karen received nice gifts & we had a good time. Herbert went to call on
Charles & Esther Haughton.
January 20, 1974
We attended Crum Creek Church. We didn’t go to the service at St. J. Lutheran
Church in the evening. I didn’t feel well enough to go.
January 21, 1974
Herbert took me up to see Dr. Feldstein in the P. M. He said he thought I had a
cracked rib and told Herbert to keep me bandaged to help it heal.
January 22, 1974
We did the washing. The banadge helped relieve the pain & so I was able to help.
We worked a lot on the puzzle in the evening. My raincoat & hat came.
January 23, 1974
Herbert went to get his eyes fitted at F. Plain. We finished the large puzzle
which we received for Christmas. I wrote a letter to Joanne.
January 24, 1974
We went to Pomona Grange meeting at the home of Charles & Margaret Edwards.
Clyde Fitzer & Keith R. went with us. A nice night to go.
January 25, 1974
A very beautiful sunshiny day! Herbert went to C. Creek Church & fixed the stair
railing & other places. A letter from Lois Winchester. We cleaned out the desk
in the living room.
January 26, 1974
Herbert went to C. Creek to help Karen in the P. M. I started embroidering the
crewel work pillow that Janice gave me for Christmas.
January 27, 1974
Last night Keith R & Keith H won a plaque at the DHJA banquet at Fonda, for
raising the herd average 1530 lbs of 150 cows per cow last year. After church we
went to call on Hazel Brown.
January 28, 1974
I started working on our income tax. Herbert went up to C. Creek Church to work
a while and then he made several calls. I embroidered on sofa pillow.
January 29, 1974
We were invited up to Hilda’s & Emmett’s for dinner. Etta was also there. We had
a very pleasant time. Hilda showed me how to bind off stiches in my knitting.
January 30, 1974
I worked on the grange program. Herbert worked at the C. Creek church. I wrote a
letter to Amorita & Earl.
January 31, 1974
In the evening we went to Grange meeting at Emmett & Laura Claus’ house. It was
a bad wind storm & only 6 were there. So we couldn’t have the meeting, but we
had a good time.
February 1, 1974
It snowed some last night. Today was a beautiful, sunshiny day. Madeliene was
here. I made several cancer pads, embroidered on the crewel pillow & knitted.
The plumber helped up at church.
February 2, 1974
Lester Mosher brought down a large box of old sheets from the L. Falls Hospital
for me to use in making bed pads. Herbert & I started taking off paper in my
bedroom.
February 3, 1974
We went to C. Creek to church. It was communion Sunday. We came home from
church. It was snowing. We wrote letters to Ann & Jack.
February 4, 1974
We took more paper off of the side walls & part of the ceiling in my bedroom.
Herbert went to F. Plain after groceries. I made 6 bed pads.
February 5, 1974
Herbert finished taking off the paper in my bedroom. I went to L. C. W. meeting
with Janice. It was held at Marion Groffs. It was a very cold windy day. Herbert
went to Council meeting at Lester Moshers.
February 6, 1974
We did the washing. Herbert fixed the holes in plaster in my bedroom. It started
to snow in the evening. I embroidered, knitted and worked on bedpads.
February 7, 1974
I ironed and mended. Herbert went to the bank. He sized the bedroom walls. Keith
R. went to overnight meeting at Syracuse.
February 8, 1974
Herbert & I painted the bedroom. I received birthday cards from Ann & Martha
Hillegas.
February 9, 1974
We painted on the bedroom again. Madeliene came to clean. Herbert & I went to F.
Plain & bought paper for my bedroom. Herbert, Marta, Dean & I ate supper with
Alta & Floyd.
February 10, 1974
I started yesterday reading the New Testament. We went to C. Creek to church.
Then we went to see Lena Burkdorf at the Palatine Nursing Home.
February 11, 1974
Herbert painted a white dresser. We took Alta, Marta & Dean to chicken benefit
supper at the Community House. We hung pictures in upstairs hall.

We went up & helped Juanita take off paper in living room. Stephanie was sick &
Susan took her to see doctor at L. Falls.
February 13, 1974
Ivan Gray & another man were here in A. M. to do some wiring in my bedroom.
Herbert went up & sized the living room for Juanita.
February 14, 1974
We received some valentines & cupcakes from the rest of the family. Margaret &
Charles were here for supper. We had a good time.

I wrote a letter to Lynn & Gladys Sickler and Leland & Iva. We went to Florence
Cronkhites funeral at Fort Plain. Madeliene was here to clean.
February 16, 1974
I attended Study Class meeting at Marie Pryers. I had birthday card from Ruth
Burritt. A beautiful, sunshiny day.
February 17, 1974
We attended church at C. Creek. Then we went to a 60th wedding reception for Mr.
& Mrs. Lester Rockerfellow. Then we went to a smorgasboard at Masonic Temple.
February 18, 1974
We did the washing and I did the ironing in P. M. Herbert went up to help
Juanita. Carol (Gros) Burns stopped in to collect for Heart Fund.
February 19, 1974
I attended DAR at St. Johnsville. We picked up Mabel Newman. Wayne fixed Tom’s
car. Herbert went after groceries and gas.
February 20, 1974
It was my 75th birthday. I received a nice lot of cards. Wayne & Susan &
Stephanie were here for supper. We played Yatzee.
February 21, 1974
I received a card from the Maloys. Herbert helped Juanita put wall-board on the
hall in their house. We watched the “Waltons” on the T. V.
February 22, 1974
We planned to have grange meeting here, but we didn’t have enough for a meeting,
so we had a good time. Madeliene was here to clean.
February 23, 1974
We went to pancake dinner at the Benefit Club. Then we went to L. Falls &
ordered our carpet & venetian blinds at Lorenheims.
February 24, 1974
Karen went to the hospital early in the morning. We went to C. Creek to church.
Then we went down to Keith’s for supper. It is now almost 10 and Karen hasn’t
baby yet.
February 25, 1974
Karen had a baby girl about 5 this morning. She weighed 9 lbs & her name is
Rebecca Irene. We went up to see her & Karen after dinner. Then we went up to
see Margaret & Charles.
February 26, 1974
We had a letter from Ann & a card from Dottie Crouse. Mr. Lovenheim came to
measure our bedroom for rug size. Herbert went up to Juanita’s to do some
plastering.
February 27, 1974
I stayed home & worked. I planned the lesson for L. C. W. meeting on next
Tuesday.
February 28, 1974
Herbert took me to Cooperstown to see Dr. Carey. Mildred Klock rode over with
us.
March 1, 1974
Karen & Rebecca came home from the hospital. Herbert & Emmett painted on cellar
of church. We went to World Day of Prayer at Methodist Church in St. J.
March 2, 1974
After an early lunch we went up to see Karen, Tom & Rebecca. Marta had stayed up
there all night. Then we took 142 bed pads to Lutheran Home & went from there to
Kurt & Loretto Lockner’s.
March 3, 1974
We went to C. Creek to church. Then we went down to see Alma Miller. We came
home & got supper. Herbert went to the barn to do the chores.
March 4, 1974
We did the washing. Then Lovenheims called & said a man would be down to lay the
carpet in my bedroom. We called Keith R to come to move furniture. He stayed for
dinner with us.
March 5, 1974
I ironed in A. M. I went to L. C. W. meeting at Mardis Bower’s. I led the
lesson. Herbert had a card from Eva Thode.
March 6, 1974
We went to Herkimer & L. Falls. We bought a bed, dresser & wardrobe at
Feldman’s. Ruth Sheffield called me on the phone. I sent 5 birthday cards. A
beautiful warm day.
March 7, 1974
The boys brought down the furniture from Feldmans. I got some of my things put
in the new dresser. Karen & Tom & Rebecca called for a little while in P. M.
March 8, 1974
It was Herbert’s 70th birthday. We had Margaret & Charles here for supper & had
a good time. Herbert received a nice lot of cards.
March 9, 1974
We put things away. We discarded one of the old wardrobes. Herbert went up to
work at the church for a while in the afternoon.
March 10, 1974
We attended church at C. Creek. Then Herbert & I went for a ride. We thought we
would call on the Edwards, but they were not at home. So we ate dinner in
Johnstown.
March 11, 1974
We washed. Herbert hung some clothes out doors. I went to Hilda’s to work on
making quilts for L. C. W. Herbert & Emmett painted at the church.
March 12, 1974
Herbert worked at church again. I stayed home & ironed & made cookies. In the

Herbert went to C. Creek Church. I worked on bed pads & sewed another quilt. We
went to Lenten Service at St. J. in evening.

I went up to Alta’s to plan quilts for L. C. W. We stayed for dinner. Then
Herbert took me to the hairdressers at F. Plain.

My dress came, which I had ordered from Hershners. I started embroidering it.
Madeliene was here.
March 16, 1974
I went to Study Class at F. Plain at the home of Helen Miller on Reid St.
Herbert went to C. Creek & Tom & Walt helped him load the truck with junk from
the basement of church.
March 17, 1974
James Bellinger died this forenoon at L. Falls Hospital at 10 o’clock. We
attended Crum Creek Church Service. It was a blustery wintry day.
March 18, 1974
We washed. I tied off a quilt. Herbert worked on staining the large desk chair
from upstairs. We listened to Billy Graham on TV. We had a letter from Ann.
March 19, 1974
We went to Herkimer to see about our car insurance. Herbert took me to DAR
meeting at 7:00. Margaret McKay was the speaker. Mabel Newman rode with us.
March 20, 1974
We went to James Bellingers funeral in P. M. It was at Lull’s at 2 o’clock &
there was a large no. of people there. We attended the Lenten Service at St. J.
Lutheran church.
March 21, 1974
Herbert worked on refinishing at home. I embroidered on my yellow dress.
March 22, 1974
We had the Grange meeting here. There were 10 present. Madeliene came to clean
in the P. M. Keith R. went to a meeting in Syracuse.
March 23, 1974
I wrote up the account of the grange meeting for the newspaper. Herbert worked
up at Keith Herbert’s all day. I worked on bedpads & finished my dress.
March 24, 1974
We went to C. Creek to church. Then we went to see Charles & Margaret & stayed
for supper. We went to Union Service at Reformed Church in the evening.
March 25, 1974
A beautiful sunny day but cold. Herbert went to Keith Herbert’s to paint. I put
the hem in my new yellow dress. I talked with Alma & Ethel on the telephone.
March 26, 1974
Laura Claus and Hilda Mosher spent the day with us. We women made 36 bed pads
and Herbert painted on the desk. I rode along when Herbert took the girls home.
March 27, 1974
Beulah Sanders, Herbert and I went to the Parish Hall for dinner for the
elderly. In the evening we attended the 4th Lenten Service at St. J. Church.
March 28, 1974
We invited Charles & Margaret down to attend the dinner at the Roush Hall. Then
we went down to Keith Raymonds so that M. & Charles could see Rebecca, who was
down here.
March 29, 1974
Madeliene was here in P. M. In the morning I baked a pie and 3 pie shells.
Herbert went up to help Juanita for a while.
March 30, 1974
Herbert went with Pastor Clark & Herbert Kraft to a church meeting at
Canajoharie. We had a letter from Lynn & Gladys Sickler.
March 31, 1974
Pastor Clark and Keith R. rode to church with us. Keith R. and Dean came up for
a little while to help move the big desk & bed back in place.
April 1, 1974
I put all of the things back in the big desk in my bedroom. Karen, Rebecca and
Tom stopped in to see me. Herbert helped Juanita in the P. M.
April 2, 1974
LCW meeting was held here. There were 10 present. Herbert went to church council
meeting at home of David Hayes.
April 3, 1974
We washed in forenoon. Janice came up to help me with our income tax. Bad
tornadoes in several states killed a lot of people.
April 4, 1974
I did the ironing. Herbert took me to F. Plain to the hairdresser’s. I bought
some wool yarn & started to crochet a scarf. Very warm day.
April 5, 1974
Alma, Ethel Haig & Alta Weaver went with us to dinner at St. J. Then they came
home with us for a little while.
April 6, 1974
It was a nice day. Herbert painted for Juanita. I wrote up lineage which
Gertrude Lance wanted.
April 7, 1974
We went to C. Creek church. It was communion. Then we went to call on Charles &
Margaret. From there we went to the Valmar for supper.

Herbert mailed our income tax blanks today. Then we went to Juanitas & painted
the living room ceiling with a roller. I worked on bed pads.
April 9, 1974
We went to Cooperstown Hospital to see Dr. Carey. We stopped in F. Plain on the
way back & put in an order for clothes for Herbert at Wards. We ate at
McKensie’s Restaurant.

I wrote a letter to Ruth Burritt and cards to Lena Burkdorf and Mary Schell.
Herbert stained the stair rail in the front hall & took up the pads on the
stairs. I crocheted & knitted & made bed pads.
April 11, 1974
Herbert painted the front stair steps. I knitted & crocheted. We attended Lenten
Service at the St. J. Lutheran Church.
April 12, 1974
We attended Good Friday Service at the Methodist Church from 1-3. Then we went
to Fort Plain to get some things we had ordered from Wards. Had a card from
Joanne & family.
April 13, 1974
I hemmed the new curtains. We put them up in my bedroom. Herbert finished
painting in front hall. Juanita, Luke & Kelley were here in P. M. and brought
goodies for Easter.
April 14, 1974
We went to Easter Sunrise Service at Reformed Church in St. J. Then we went to
C. Creek Lutheran Church. From there we went to Janice’s & Keith’s for supper.
18 were present.
April 15, 1974
We did the washing. Then we went to F. Plain to buy birthday presents for Ann &
Jack. Herbert painted in the front hall.
April 16, 1974
Herbert took me over to D. A. R. meeting and then went to see Harold & Dorothy.
Before we went to St. J, we went to Swartz Funeral Parlor. Noah Frederick was
killed last Sunday.
April 17, 1974
We went to the dinner for the elderly at American Legion Hall in St. J. Beulah
Sanders went with us. We went to Fort Plain & got Herberts jacket & pants.
April 18, 1974
Margaret & Charles came down in P. M. and brought back my watch, which I had
repaired in Dolgeville. Herbert painted the back porch.
April 19, 1974
We attended card party at Grange Hall. We played Pinochle & Herbert won 1st
prize & I won second.
April 20, 1974
We attended grange meeting at C. Creek. Keith obligated Louis & Linda Capece in
4 degrees.
April 21, 1974
We went to C. Creek to church. Then we went for a ride & ate dinner in Herkimer
Diner. It was a very nice day.
April 22, 1974
I wrote letter to Joanne. A nice day. Rained a little in the evening. Herbert
put summer screens in the porch & painted them. I wrote up grange news for
paper.
April 23, 1974
I wrapped up grange money to send to bank when I get a chance. I knitted and
made bed pads.
April 24, 1974
Gertrude Lance called on telephone. She wanted me to send her bed pads & lots of
other things. So we got a box ready & sent it the next morning.
April 25, 1974
Herbert, Keith, Etta, Clyde & I went to Pomona Grange meeting at Sacandaga. 25
were present.
April 26, 1974
I worked on Grange letters & money. Madeliene was here. Herbert painted on the
porch, but it was cold and windy. It was Janice’s birthday.
April 27, 1974
We invited the Brimmers to go to a card party at Mayfield Grange. We had a very
good time.
April 28, 1974
We attended church at C. Creek. Then we went out to eat at Salisbury. We went to
the Capese Funeral Parlor where Clifford Mosher was. We went to F. P. where H.
Hallenbeck was at Gray’s Funeral Parlor.
April 29, 1974
We did the washing & hung the clothes out doors. Herbert mowed the lawns. I
knitted a lot on a red scarf.
April 30, 1974
Dr. Muckleck pulled an upper tooth for me and fixed some others. He said I would
have to get a new upper denture. We went to St. J. to church at St. J.
May 1, 1974
We received another letter from Morris Halladay. He said we should send our
check by the 27th of May for the Alaska trip.
May 2, 1974
We went to Fonda for our supper. We enjoyed ourselves. I wrote quite a lot of
business letters.
May 3, 1974
We went to spend the evening with George & Ida Berner. We had a very pleasant
time.
May 4, 1974
It was sunny, but cold. Herbert worked on putting more window panes on the front
porch. Keiths attended the 55th wedding anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Luft.
May 5, 1974
Ida & George Berner went with us to C. Creek to church. Tom gave the sermon &
Keith R. took charge of communion & the rest of the service. Then we went to
hear an organ recital at the Grace church.
May 6, 1974
We had a nice letter from Ann & Jack. I made bedpads and crocheted a lot on a
scarf. Herbert went to the Farmers Banquet at Masonic Temple in F. Plain.
May 7, 1974
I worked on lunch clothes. I went with Janice to L. C. W. at Alta’s. We had a
letter from Alice Meyer, saying she couldn’t get a reservation for Alaska Trip.
May 8, 1974
We went up to Little Falls to see about outdoor carpet for the front porch. I
worked on the place mats. Herbert painted on the garage.
May 9, 1974
Herbert took me to F. Plain to keep an appointment with the hairdressers. We
sent the check for our trip to Alaska. We had a letter from the Dunns.
May 10, 1974
We went to Grange meeting at C. Creek. Grace Bellinger received 25 year
certificate. We had a good time.
May 11, 1974
We took Ida & George Berner to the Friendship Fair at the Clinton Home. We went
from there to see Esther & Pete Maiura & then to see Veba & Marion Black.
May 12, 1974
We attended C. Creek Church. Then Herbert took me to dinner at Straitford for
Mother’s Day. From there we went to call on Fancher & Eleanor Schuyler. Janice &
Keith brought me 2 boxes of petunias.
May 13, 1974
Rained all forenoon. I worked on place mats. Herbert painted on garage in P. M.
He & Keith R. went to St. J. Lutheran joint council meeting.
May 14, 1974
We did the washing & dried the clothes out of doors. I ironed some. In the
evening we went to Swartz’s Funeral Parlor. Mrs. Geesler was dead.
May 15, 1974
I finished making the set of 4 place mats for the grange exhibit. I also made a
star for the exhibit.
May 16, 1974
Herbert took me to the dentist’s in P. M. Dr Muelleck had my new upper denture
ready. He put that in & I have to go back again for more work on my lower
denture.
May 17, 1974
Clyde Fitzer went with us to the neighbornight meeting at Mayfield. Sacandaga
and Johnstown put on the program.
May 18, 1974
Veba & Marion came here in P. M. We took them up to Keith’s & Juanita’s for a
little while. Then we came back home & got supper. A beautiful day.
May 19, 1974
We attended church at C. Creek. Then we went to Dolgeville to call on Margaret
and Charles. We ate supper at the Valmar. Herbert took Madeliene a birthday
card.
May 20, 1974
Herbert planted a lot of his garden. I helped chuck the gladiola bulbs. The men
started working on the land they rented near Little Falls.
May 21, 1974
We called at Feldsteins. Dr. Feldstein was to be buried the next day. Herbert
went to Snells Bush Church to help plan for the reunion.
May 22, 1974
Then we went and called on Alma Miller. From there we went for supper with
George & Ida Berner. We looked at cameras.
May 23, 1974
Ernest Herb stopped in on his way home & we bought a new camera from him.
May 24, 1974
We had the baking contests at the grange. I won first on star and place mats &
second a roll jell cake. Lulu Robinson went with us.
May 25, 1974
Herbert & Karen mowed the cemetery. They had quite a scare. The bull almost got
in the cemetery. Karen took Rebecca out by a back way. Then the men came & got
bull in the barn.
May 26, 1974
Emmett & Hilda Mosher went after church with us to Fosters for supper. Charles &
Margaret happened to be there also. Herbert put flowers on the graves at St. J.
and at Fairview Cemetery.
May 27, 1974
We did the washing in the A. M. Then about 1 0’clock we went to see Mr & Mrs
Drak to give them some things for Grange Fair. Then we went to watch the 10 mile
annie race on the Susquehanna Race. Wayne & Keith H. were 2 of the racers.
May 28, 1974
I ironed. We went to F. Plain & I bought white dress and went to the dentist’s.
In the evening Frank Youker & his wife called. Walter was in accident near the
greenhouse. They thought he might have 2 cracked ribs.
May 29, 1974
Walter felt better. We went to Epratah to see about getting our car painted. We
were invited up to Etta’s for supper. We had a real nice time.
May 30, 1974
A very nice day. We took clothes to St. J. to be cleaned. We got tomato plants &
Herbert set them out. We drove over to Tom’s & Karen’s, but they weren’t home.
May 31, 1974
Madeliene was here to clean. We had a letter from Mae Chase. We went to St. J.
and got my clothes from the cleaner’s. Then we went up beyond L. Falls to see
where the boys are working. Then we ate supper near L. Falls.
June 1, 1974
I went to the dentist’s at 11o’clock. He had fixed over my lower plate. It was a
big day in F. Plain. Herbert went down & bought our supper & brought it home.
June 2, 1974
We went to church at C. Creek. Herbert took flowers for in the vases. We went to
L. F. Hospital & called on Mary Snell, Mabel McCrone, and Arthur Leeper. Then we
went to seet Jud & Mae Chase.
June 3, 1974
I washed 3 dresses & ironed them to have them ready to go on our trip. We
received letter from Margaret Sager, saying they had moved to Burlington.
June 4, 1974
Herbert took me to L. C. W. meeting at Laura Clause’s. Pastor led the lesson.
Herbert took a lot of pictures. He went to have Allen Shell make keys for our
suitcases.
June 5, 1974
Herbert helped Keith H in P. M. A beautiful day. We went up to Capece’s in the
evening & practised skit for grange program at Salisbury grange.
June 6, 1974
The men put 10 loads of chopped hay in the Harvestore today. A beautiful day. I
wrote to the Dunns & to the Sicklers. Reuben Failing asked us to go our to
dinner Sat. night, but I said we couldn’t.
June 7, 1974
Herbert helped the men with corn and haylage. He was very tired when he came

A beautiful Sabbath Day. Herbert went to Syracuse with Pastor Clark to attend
Synod. Tom & Keith R. had the service at C. Creek. Janice invited me down to
supper. Robert & Hazel Brown called.

I worked on bed pads. I finished another leprosy bandage. The men put haylage in
the Harvestore. I wrote some letters.

A beautiful hot day. I washed & ironed 2 of my dresses.

We washed early. Then Herbert went to old place in C. Creek & plowed all day.
Margaret & Charles came in P. M. I did part of the ironing.

I finished the ironing. We went to Perth to grange meeting. Karen, Mae & Lulu
went with us. Mr. Rowland was there.

It rained by spells. We went to Fort Plain. I bought a new cane & Herbert bought
more clothes and a man’s suitcase. Keith got back from N. York.

Herbert worked on lawns. We went to Swiss Steak supper at the Masonic Temple. It
was put on by members of Methodist Church.

We attended church at C. Creek. Then at 1:15, Alma Miller & Ethel Haig took us
to the Manor for a delicious dinner.

I washed out a few things & ironed them. Herbert went to F. Plain to get some
pointers on how to use our new camera.

I finished the ironing. I had a letter from Marion Black. I attended the
Tri-Chapter meeting of the DAR at St. J. Beulah Sanders went with me.

Herbert went to F. Plain to get some medicine & clogs for me. He then went to C.
Creek where they put haylage in the silo. He went to a joint council meeting at
St. Johnsville.

I went to F. Plain to get a “permanent.” I bought some sun glasses. Keith R. and
Rusty Capece called us on the phone in the evening.
June 21, 1974
Pastor Clark, Varnum Casler and Hazel Swanson called here. Joanne phoned to us.
Gordon also talked. It was a very rainy day. Alma called on phone.

Keith R., Marta, Dean, Herbert & I started on our trip to Alaska about 10
o’clock. We reached the Syracuse airport OK. We ate lunch. We then boarded plane
for Chicago where we stopped at Statter Hilton.

We visited Chicago Museum. We ate dinner at the Stockman’s Restaurant. Then we
went to Union Station & boarded the Amtrak train. We ate supper in the diner. It
is so raven that I can scarcely write.

Stayed on train all night and day. Then we went to Glacier Park. A bus took us
up to Glacier Park Hotel. It is beautiful. I wrote to Keith H & sent a card to
Mary Kelly.

We went by bus through Glacier Nat. Park in Montana in A. M. In P. M. we went
through Waterton Mt. Park in Alberta, Canada. We stayed all night at Prince of
Wales Hotel.

It rained hard in the night. We got up 5 o’clock to eat at the hotel. Then we
boarded a Greyhound bus. We ate our lunch on top of 22nd Tower Bldg at Calgary.
Then we came to Banff Hotel & ate dinner in Alhambra.

We had a group picture taken in front of Banff Springs Hotel. Then we went by
bus for a 2 hr. drive to Lake Lounse Hotel. The Schmicks came over to play
Pinochle.

A beautiful sunshiny morning. We ate in the cafeteria with Mr. & Mrs.
Schoonmaker. I am writing cards & Herbert is going out to take pictures.

We left 9:15 AM. Mrs Stout found she could buy me a pair of bedroom slippers. We
ate at the Northlander Motor Lodge. We arrived at Stockman’s Inn at Kamloop at

We left Kamloop at 8:30. A beautiful day. We ate lunch at Kanaka Bar, Fraser
Canyon, B. C. Then we went to Vancouver and are staying 2 nights at the Georgia
Hotel.

A beautiful day and a very busy one. We went on all day trip to Victoria. We had
to 2 take a ferry over and back. We ate at a famous Olde England Inn. Then we
went for Butchart’s Garden Tour.
July 2, 1974
Went for a bus trip around the city. Had lunch at Capilano Canyon. Had dinner in
private dining salon at 5:45. Went by bus to board “Princess” Patricia.

Last evening we played Pinochle with Marie & Ethel. We had breakfast at the
first sitting at 8 A. M. At 10:00 we are to have a fire drill.

In the P. M. we attended the reception given by the officers of the Princess
Patricia. We wore evening clothes & it was a nice affair. Then we ate dinner in
the dining room. Next we saw 2 movies. We ate breakfast and then boarded a bus
for Ketchekan. At 6:30 ship arrives at Wrangell.

We stayed on our boat and commenced a ride into Glacier Bay. We saw glaciers &
huge icebergs and it was a wonderful sight.

We are docked at Shaquay Alaska. We expected to board a train to go to Lake
Bennett, B. C., but word just came that the trip is cancelled on account of a
bridge out.
July 7, 1974
We went for a bus ride through Juneau. We saw the Menendahl Glacier. I bought
some gifts. They helped me with wheelchair.

We went on a trip around Prince Rupert, B. C. We had Captains’ Dinner & show put
on by young people. Very good.

We left the boat & went to Olymphic Hotel in Seattle, Wash. 2 immigration
officials boarded our bus. This P. M. I fell in the hotel room & hurt myself
again.

We left at 8:30 by bus from Seattle to go to Spokane. The bus driver explained
pts. of interest along the way. Stopped at Gingko Museum & H. took a picture.
Ate at Hall Mark Inn. Reached Davenport Hotel at Spokane about 3.

We went by bus from Seattle, Washington to Spokane in Wash. It was a long ride
but an interesting one. We ate at the Hall Mark Inn. We arrived at the Davenport
Hotel about 3 PM.

We stayed at Davenport Hotel in Spokane, Wash. Lots of the tour group attended
the World’s Fair today. We didn’t go. I fell in our room & hurt myself again. So
we didn’t do anything extra to save our strength.

We got up early. In the evening we took a bus to the waiting room of the plane
station. We boarded plane, but had to wait a long time. Janice & Keith met us.
We arrived home about 1 AM Monday.

Herbert and I didn’t do much today. We were all tired out. It seemed almost
impossible to keep going. We went to bed quite early, Hazel Swanson stopped in
to say hello.

Today we did a large washing. It was a beautiful day. Juanita & Karen & their
children came down for a couple of hrs. in the P. M. We had a good time. Herbert
Janice went to the bank at F. Plain.

I did the ironing. Margaret and Charles called here in the evening. Alma Miller
was here in the afternoon. A nice day. The men drew haylage to C. Creek.

Herbert took me to see Dr. Carey and Dr. Mook at Cooperstown Hospital. They said
I had to take medicine, “stay put” for a week & then come back to the hospital.

Madeliene came to clean in P. M. Yesterday afternoon the men put down the carpet
on the 2 porches. We received invitation to Beverly Rabalear’s wedding.

Janice went after Marta & Dean at camp. I did desk work and knitted a lot. I
tried to do as the doctor said I should to try to get well.

Herbert went to church. Luke & Mary K. sent me some flowers. A beautiful day. We
sat on the front porch before supper. Marta & Dean came to get their Alaska
presents.

We fixed some string beans to freeze. Alta was here in P. M. She brought us some
cookies. Susan & Stephanie came later. Herbert & Keith R. went to Council
meeting at Ralph Groff’s.

Janice canned 5 canners full & we canned 1 of beans. Catherine Hoffman called on
the phone & said she plans to come to see me Monday at 1:30.

We canned 7 more qts. of beans. Wendy Safford sold us 2 boxes of Christmas
cards. We received a card from Ann & Jack. Margaret & Charles came in the P. M.

We went to Cooperstown to see Dr. Carey. My foot had improved. Herbert got our
pictures back which he took in our trip.

Rachel Horn called here in the forenoon. Herbert went to grange meeting. For the
lecturer’s program, he talked on our trip to Alaska. I finished another cancer
leprosy bandage.

I went upstairs & wrote up the grange news for the paper. Alta & Richard
Bellinger came after beans. I started knitting another leprosy bandage.

Herbert went to the service at the Palatine Church. We went to call on the

I put more things in our trip scrapbook. We cleaned up the house. Herbert went
to C. C. to drive truck. Catherine and Edward Hoffman were here in P. M. A bad
thunder storm about 6:30.

Grace Youker’s funeral. We played Pinochle in evening.

We went to Swartz’s funeral parlor to see Kate Smith. Then we came home & I
finished cutting up pickles. Ida & George Berner came in the evening. We played

Juanita had a baby boy, weight 9 lb 10 oz a little after midnight. They named
him Matthew Keith. I went to the dentist to have my teeth cleaned.

We canned 3 qts of golden glow pickles. In the P. M. we went to the hospital to
see Juanita & the baby. He is adorable. Then we went to call on Margaret &
Charles. She gave me some quilts.

Herbert went to St. J. Reformed Church. Rev. Geddes preached. Reuben Failing,
Alta Allen & Lulu Robinson went with us to the picnic at home of Mr & Mrs
Rowland.

I made cookies for Vacation Bible School. I made oatmeal & sugar cookies. I
bleached a leprosy bandage & it came out real white.

We went to see Dr. Carey at Cooperstown Hospital. He said I should wear a rubber

We went to Vacation Bible School at Crum Creek in evening. I wrote to Mrs. & Mrs

President Nixon resigned from office. Margaret Sage and Eva Atwood came from
Burlington at 12:30. We went for a ride up to Crum Creek. Eva, Herbert & I
played Pinochle.

A nice day. We took pads up to Lutheran Home. Then we called on Margaret &
Charles and then on Keith & Juanita for their wedding anniversaries.

We attended Methodist Church in St. J. After Margaret & Eva finished lunch they
started home at 12 noon. Then Reuben Failing took us out to Avery’s for dinner.

We did a large washing & I did most of the ironing. I put on shoes for first
time in over 9 weeks. I also went back up stairs to sleep.

Another beautiful day. I finished ironing & did some mending. The men are
drawing baled hay in Keith R’s barn. We had letters from Mary Neff & Ruth
Burritt.

Herbert & Lester Mosher collected money from church members to repair the inside
of C. Creek Lutheran Church. A lovely day. The men drew in a lot of hay. We
canned 7 qts of corn & froze some.

We canned 3 ½ qts. of tomatoes. I stitched on some bed pads, which I had made
out of small pieces of cloth.

Madeliene was here to clean. We went to grange meeting in the evening. Lulu
Robinson & Alfred Reese went with us. The men drew in baled hay.

We attended Service at Grace Church in St. J. Then we went to see about getting
an Amer. Field Service boy to speak at Grange in Sept. Then we went to family
dinner with Tom & Karen.

It rained so the men could not get hay. We went in the evening to Swartz’s
Funeral Parlor. Doris Casler died last Sat.

Mr. & Mrs. Neff and Mr. & Mrs. Fuller spent the day with us. We took them to the
Valmar Hotel for dinner. We stopped at Keith Herbert’s & then went to Museum at

Mrs. Clyde Fitzer died today in Canajoharie Nursing Home. We went to Cooperstown
Hospital for my appointment. As Dr Carey was away, another doctor looked at my
foot.

Herbert & I made 7 qts. of tomato juice and canned 2 qts. of pickles. I made 5
more bed pads. Keith R. went to a dairy meeting near Binghamton.

We went to the Capece Funeral Parlor in St. J. We talked with Clyde Fitzer.
Herbert mowed the lawn. Madeliene came to clean.

We did the washing & I did most of the ironing. It was a beautiful day. Herbert
mowed the lawn. He picked glads for the reunion. Edith & Carol Timmerman came
after them.

We attended the Snell-Z-Timmerman service at Snells Bush. A minister from
Herkimer preached. We went for a ride to the old place. Tom & Karen were not
home.

We left home about 10 of 8 AM. We went up to say goodbye to Karen & Tom & Becky.
We went to Meshoppen & called on the Shoemakers. Then we went & stayed all night
with the Hilemens. We got there at 8 P. M.

The Hilemans took us for a ride around their farms. We left at 10:15. We went to
East Berlin & bought peaches, pears, apples, plums and prunes. We stayed in a
hotel in Ephratah.

We reached home about 6:30 P. M. We got our supper, after Herbert had brought
the fruit in. It rained in the night.

canned pears and peaches. I planned the program for grange.

We attended church at St. J. Rev. & Mrs. Schweyer were there. A reception was
held for them downstairs. We went to call on Clyde Christman & family. Clyde Jr.
and family were going home to Cal. by train.

so that they would not get wet.

Harry’s wife was dead. Then we went to call on Lena Burkdorf. We ate at the Jack
Frost Restaurant.

with us. There was a very severe thunder storm on the way home.

We went up to Smiths Grocery Store & ordered the groceries for the DAR meeting.

Herbert took me over to D. A. R. at Community House. We went early and was
chairman of the supper committee. Herbert furnished the flowers.

I finished the ironing. Herbert dug out his gladiola bulbs. I helped cut off the

ensilage in the silo.

Grange Deputy could take it to Cortland. Then we went to Johnstown Lutheran
church for installation of officers.

Herbert took Keith R. to Albany airport. Keith went to Chicago to a Dairy
Meeting. Dean stayed out of school & he spent the day with us.

Charles & Margaret came down in late afternoon. We played Pinochle & watched T.
V. in the evening.

The men finished filling the silo here. Then Herbert & I went to Lutheran Home
to get material for bed pads. We ate supper at Herkimer Diner.

I baked 2 different kinds of cookies. Madeliene came in P. M. to do the
cleaning. I cut out bed pads. I worked at the tablecloth which came yesterday.

Herbert & I went after dinner to clean the grange hall. In the evening we took
Alma, the Berners & Lulu Robinson to the grange hall. 32 grangers & non-grangers
were there. Herbert showed his Alaska slides.

I fixed liners for bed pads & basted on the covers. After dinner we went to
spend the p. M. with Carlton & Dorothy Boslet in Middleville.

We went to C. Creek to church. Then we drove over to the Turkey Farm & had
supper. A bad storm & hail on the way home.

A sunshiny day. Herbert trimmed bushes around back porch. He went to Leggs & to

I went with Janice to L. C. W. meeting at Olga Beischers in P. M. Herbert drove
trucks in afternoon for the men. They put 22 loads of chopped corn in the silo.

I finished the ironing and knitted, made bed pads and worked on my tablecloth.

Herbert drove for the men to put chopped silage in the Harvestore. They worked
until dark.

I went to hairdresser’s. Hilda & Emmett were here in the evening for dessert &
coffee. We played Pinochle. We received a letter from Marie Helmers.

The men drew in lots of haylage from Keith’s place up to C. Creek to put in the
Harvestore. I wrote up grange notes, embroidered, etc.

We went to C. Creek to Church. It was Communion. Then we went to Gloversville to
call on Hollenbecks, but they weren’t at home. Herbert took pictures of the
scenery.

Herbert helped the boys by driving truck. He also worked some more in cleaning
up the garden. I cleaned kitchen cupboards.

The men worked with haylage. Keith R. attended Harold Swarts’ funeral. I made a
dozen bed pads. We played Pinochle in the evening.

I went to DAR Round Table at the DAR House in F. Plain. I rode with Bertha
Flanders & some others. Herbert drove truck to help the men make a pile of corn.

I made 2 chocolate cakes, 12 bran muffins, and nut bread to take to the auction
the next night. The men drew corn.

The grange meeting went off well. Rusty Capece showed movies of the Grand
Canyon. The auction went off well.

We went to Lull’s Funeral Parlor in the evening. Kenneth Groff’s funeral was the
next day. Margaret & Charles were in an accident on their way to funeral parlor.

We attended Evangelic Church. Matthew was baptized. Then we went to turkey
dinner at Cathetachne Grange hall. From there we went to see Margaret & Charles.

We went to Phil & Iva Wendell’s for the day. Herbert took his Alaska slides
along to show Phil & Iva. We had a good visit.

Herbert took me to DAR meeting at Roger Johnson’s museum. We had a very good
time. It rained in A. M. but cleared up in P. M.

A dark rainy day. I made bed pads, knitted & embroidered. Juanita & the children
called in P. M. Iva called us on the phone. A letter from Karen & Tom.

We went up to Juanita’s for a birthday dinner in honor of Stephanie’s 1st
birthday. Herbert didn’t feel well & went home. I rode home with Keith R. &
family.

Herbert took me to Study Class meeting at Carol Bramer Smith’s in P. M. In

We attended service at Evangelic Church at C. Creek. Then we went to see
Margaret & Charles and stayed for chicken & biscuit supper.

We did the washing. We dried most of the clothes in the house. Herbert put the
storm windows on the back porch.

knitted. It was a nice warm day & the men drew in baled hay.

We attended the funeral of Chester Failing. Then we went after Margaret &

Madeliene was here in P. M. Herbert went up to C. Creek to plow, but it didn’t
work right, so he came home. We played Pinochle in the evening.

Keith & Janice went to State Grange at Henrietta. They stayed with Karen & Tom

We attended church at C. Creek. Then we attended the 60th wedding anniversary

We had the harvest community supper at C. Creek Grange Hall. Lulu Robinson went
with us. There were 44 present.

We went to C. Creek to church. Then we drove up to see Margaret & Charles. We
went from there to Stewarts Ice Cream store in F. Plain & had supper there.

It rained some. We got the clothes off the line & brought them in the house when
it started raining. We had a letter from Larry Allen.

It was a very rainy day. We went to the chicken & biscuit luncheon at the St. J.
Lutheran Church. We went to F. Plain & visited. We went up to Veba’s & Marion’s.

We found Veba & Marion at home. They asked us to stay all night. Esther & Pete &
family and Betty & Carl came over in the evening.

We got home at 10:30. We came on Thruway from Verona & got off at L. Falls exit.
I went to get my “permanent” in P. M.

We went to grange meeting. Keith R. couldn’t go as his back was bothering him
again. Madeliene was here to clean in the afternoon. I did the ironing.

We went to church at C. Creek. Then we went to F. Plain & got Ruth Sheffield &
Florence Bailey & went up to Alma Millers for supper. We had a good visit.
November 11, 1974
Armistace Day. Herbert was up at Keith Herbert’s all day. He drove truck while
cutting corn. I stayed home all day. Alma phoned.
November 12, 1974
We went up to Alta & Floyds in the P. M. We played Dominoes for a while & then
we stayed for supper. It rained hard in the night.
November 13, 1974
I made cookies to take to the bake sale tomorrow night at Mayfield Grange. The
men worked on cleaning the barn out here. They didn’t get it finished.
November 14, 1974
We attended Pomona Grange meeting at Mayfield. Clyde, Mae, Etta, and Laura went
with us. Keith R. and Janice & Marta & Dean went also.
November 15, 1974
I worked on bed-pads, cancer bandages & embroidering. Herbert washed the windows
on the outside by the bay window.
November 16, 1974
We went to pancake supper at Sprakers. Ida & George Berner went with us. We
played Pinochle at their house in the evening.
November 17, 1974
We went to C. Creek to church. Then we went up to see Margaret & Charles. Marie
Heilman phoned & said they are planning to come up here this Wed.
November 18, 1974
We did the washing. Then we went to F. Plain & bought some Christmas presents.
November 19, 1974
I did the ironing in A. M. The boys shelled corn across the Thruway in the
night. They also had shelled in the P. M. up at W. Threshers.
November 20, 1974
George & Ida Berner came in P. M. Chalmer & Marie Heilman came later. Three of
us played Pinochle in evening. It was a rainy day.
November 21, 1974
We took Marie & Chalmer to L. Falls, Dolgeville & C. Creek. We stopped at
Juanita’s & Keith Herberts. We had eaten dinner at the Valmar in Dolgeville.
November 22, 1974
We went to St. J. for “Meals on Wheels” dinner. Then we went to Berners until 5
o’clock. In the evening we attended C. Creek Grange meeting.
November 23, 1974
Chalmer & Marie started home a little before 8 o’clock in the morning. It was a
beautiful day. I wrote up the grange news.
November 24, 1974
A very rainy day. We went to C. Creek to church. In the evening we went to
annual Thanksgiving service at the Congregational church.
November 25, 1974
Herbert went to see Mr. Mourey about papering the church. He couldn’t come
before Jan. so Herbert is going to see Mr. Lorenheim tomorrow. Keith R. shelled
corn across the Thruway after dark.
November 26, 1974
We went to St. J. for dinner. It was very cold. Then we asked Ida & George to
stay to play Pinochle for a while.
November 27, 1974
We rode up to St. J. again with Berners to eat with the elderly. Then we took
them to Johnstown & then to Britts store. I bought a blouse. We used S & H
stamps to get a hamper and suitcase.
November 28, 1974
Thanksgiving Day. We were invited down to Janice’s & Keith’s. Juanita & Keith H
and family & Harold Putnam were there also.
November 29, 1974
A nice sunshiny day. I made bedpads, finished a leprosy bandage & embroidered on
my tablecloth. Madeliene was here.
November 30, 1974
We went to Vernon Baptist Church to attend 50th wedding anniversary of Veba &
Marion Black. Marion Groff went with us.
December 1, 1974
We went to C. Creek to church. Then we went to special Advent Service at St. J.
church in evening. We ate supper at Stewarts.
December 2, 1974
It rained & snowed. Some schools were closed. Herbert took letter to F. Plain.
We sent the final payment on the Caribbean Cruise.
December 3, 1974
We did the washing in the forenoon. In P. M. Herbert took me to L. C. W. meeting
at Alta’s. Herbert came after me & Alta persuaded us to stay for dinner.
December 4, 1974
Herbert & I went to Little Falls to get our vaccination for smalpox. I bought a
pants suit at Penney’s Store. I did the ironing in the forenoon.
December 5, 1974
Herbert showed his Alaska slides at the Palatine Nursing Home. I worked on bed
pads and started making bandage rolls.
December 6, 1974
6 of us went to Perth Grange hall to a special meeting called by Bob Drake, the
N. Y. State Master. It was very late when we got home.
December 7, 1974
Madeliene was here. Herbert went to C. Creek to help work on the house. Janice
took Dean to see Dr. Muller. The doctor changed his medicine.
December 8, 1974
We went to C. Creek to church. Then we drove up to Lyle’s Inn and had a good
dinner there. In the evening we attended the Advent Service at the Methodist
Church in St. J.
December 9, 1974
Herbert went down to the bank to cash our checks. Herbert & I finally found out
we had to send our vaccination blanks to a doctor in Utica to be signed.
December 10, 1974
We went to Senior Citizens party at the community House in St. J. There were 135
present. In the evening Etta, Mae & Laura went with us to special meeting at
Perth Grange.
December 11, 1974
I prepared the Grange program. The men moved some heifers up to this barn from
the lower place.
December 12, 1974
We went to F. Plain in A. M. and bought a lot of Christmas presents. Keith R.
stopped in P. M. and stayed a while. Keith H & Juanita are visiting Bill & Pat
Eyck.
December 13, 1974
We attended Grange meeting. Madeliene was here to clean. Lulu went with us to
Grange meeting.
December 14, 1974
I wrote up grange news for the newspapers.
December 15, 1974
We attended church at Crum Creek. Then we went up to Margarets & Charles and
stayed for supper.
December 16, 1974
I wrote a lot of Christmas cards. It snowed quite a lot.
December 17, 1974
We went to F. Plain & did a lot of over Christmas shopping. After we got home we
wrapped up most of our presents. We attended DAR Christmas party.
December 18, 1974
We went to Britts in P. M. We ate our supper there. Then we stopped at F. Plain
& finished our Christmas shopping.
December 19, 1974
We set up & trimmed the Christmas tree. Herbert, Don & Walt set up the table in
the grange hall for the community supper. I made a rolled leprosy bandage.
December 20, 1974
We put up more Christmas decoration. Madeliene was here to clean. I knitted a
leprosy bandage & embroidered on the tablecloth.
December 21, 1974
We took George & Ida Berner and Lulu Robinson with us to the Community Supper &
program at the C. Creek Grange hall. There were 56 present.
December 22, 1974
We went to C. Creek to church. Then we went to call on Ira & Edith Timmerman.
She served ice cream, cookies, etc.
December 23, 1974
We did the washing and dried the clothes in the house. I did not feel well & I
only ate a slice of toast for supper.
December 24, 1974
I ironed after I had worked dishes. We wrapped up more presents. Ida & Alma
called on telephone. Herbert phoned Iva & Philip Wendell in evening.
December 25, 1974
We were invited up to Keith Herberts for Christmas supper. Then we had the
presents in the office. They had a large Christmas tree.
December 26, 1974
Madeliene came in P. M. We got the house all ready for company.
December 27, 1974
Joanne & family got here about 9:30. They hadn’t been here in a long time & we
were very glad to see them.
December 28, 1974
We got ready for the family gathering here in the evening. We had a buffet lunch
for 24. It was a lot of work but we had a very good time.
December 29, 1974
Joanne, Gordon, Alyson & Jeffrey left for home right after we went to church. I
could hardly wait to get home. My foot hurt something dreadful.
December 30, 1974
I kept off my feet all day. I had hurt my right foot a lot more than I thought I
had Sunday before I went to church.
December 31, 1974
Herbert went up to Juanita’s & Keith’s at 7:30. After supper he is us show some of his slides. We had a nice photo of Marion & Veba from them today.
